Overview Of Installation and Local Area |
Fort Leavenworth, Kansas is located adjacent to the Missouri River along the northeastern Kansas state line and encompasses approximately 5,634 acres. Kansas City, Kansas is the closest urban area, roughly 30 miles southeast of the installation. The city of Leavenworth, population 35,000, borders the post on the south. The map on the right illustrates the greater Kansas City region and the location of Fort Leavenworth.
Established in 1827 by Colonel Henry Leavenworth, Fort Leavenworth is the oldest continually active Army post west of the Mississippi River. Because of its continual presence, Fort Leavenworth has served as an important base of operations in the west and is home to many significant historical landmarks. In 1866, the 10th Cavalry Regiment, one of four black regiments, was formed at Fort Leavenworth. Today, the prominent Buffalo Soldier Monument memorializes the significance of both the 9th and 10th Cavalry Regiments. Within the post, 213 acres have been designated as a National Historic Landmark District.
Fort Leavenworth is home to the U.S. Army Combined Arms Center with its 11 major subordinate organizations (www.leavenworth.army.mil) as well as the Department of Defense’s only maximum security military prison, the U.S. Disciplinary Barracks. Also located at Fort Leavenworth are a number of tenant organizations that directly or indirectly support the Combined Arms Center (US Army Garrison, Fort Leavenworth)
